বাংলাদেশের উচ্চমাধ্যমিক ও উচ্চ শিক্ষা বিস্তাবের একটি অনন্য বিদ্যাপিঠ। ঢাকার দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব অঞ্চলের
বৃহত্তম এই কলেজটি ইতোমধ্যেই জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের কলেজ র্যাংকিং এর তালিকার প্রথম দিকে স্থান করে
নিয়েছে। কলেজের পাঠ দানে কার্যকর পদ্ধতি অবলম্বন, সুশৃঙ্খল ব্যবস্থাপনা, সহ-শিক্ষা কার্যক্রমে সাফল্য,
শিক্ষা বোর্ড ও জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের পরীক্ষায় আশাব্যঞ্জক ফলাফলসহ ৩১টি সূচক মূল্যায়নে জাতীয়
বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের কলেজ র্যাংকিং-এ ইতোপূর্বে দেশের বেসরকারি কলেজের মধ্যে ৪র্থ ছা মহানগরীর সরকারি ও
বেসরকারি কলেজের মধ্যে ৯ম স্থান এবং জাতীয় পর্যায় ২২০০ টি কলেজের মা ২২তম স্থান অর্জন করেছে।
আশির দশকে ঢাকার যাত্রাবাড়ি কদমতলী, শ্যামপুর, দনিয়া, রায়েরবাগ, মাতুয়াইলসহ বিভিন্ন এলাকায় অর্থাৎ ডেমরা
অঞ্চলে উচ্চ শিক্ষার জন্য কোনো শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান ছিল না। এই এলাকার বেশিরভাগ পরিবার ছিল মধ্যবিত্ত,
নিম্নবিত্ত ও দরিদ্র। এলাকার শিক্ষার্থীদের উচ্চমাধ্যমিক ও উচ্চ শিক্ষা গ্রহণের সুযোগ ছিল খুবই সীমিত। এ
বাস্তবতায় এলাকায় শিক্ষা সম্প্রসারণের জন্য শিক্ষানুরাগী ও বিশিষ্টজনদের উদ্যোগে একটি মহাবিদ্যালয়
প্রতিষ্ঠার লক্ষ্যে ১৯৮৪ সালের ২২শে নভেম্বর দনিয়া এ কে হাই স্কুলে প্রথম একটি সভার আয়োজন করা হয়। এ
সভায় এলাকার গণ্যমান্য ব্যাক্তিদের পরামর্শে একটি কলেজ প্রতিষ্ঠা করার প্রস্তাব অনুমোদন করা হয়। এ
উদ্যোগ বাস্তবায়নের জন্য সভায় ১৭ সদস্য বিশিষ্ট একটি কমিটি গঠন করা হয়। একই বছর নভেম্বর মাসের ২৬ তারিখ
কলেজের ঘর নির্মাণের জন্য খুঁটি স্থাপন করা হয়। এ কারণে ২৬শে নভেম্বর দনিয়া কলেজের জন্মদিন হিসেবে
বিবেচনা করেছেন কলেজের প্রতিষ্ঠাকালীন অধ্যক্ষ জনাব এস এম কাজী আনোয়ারুল ইসলাম।
৩০শে নভেম্বর ১৯৮৪ তারিখে কলেজ প্রতিষ্ঠা কমিটির পরবর্তী সভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। কলেজ প্রতিষ্ঠার জন্য এলাকার
অধিকসংখ্যক উদ্যোক্তাদের অংশগ্রহণ বৃদ্ধি করার লক্ষ্যে এই সভায় ১৭ সদস্য বিশিষ্ট কমিটিকে ৫১ সদস্য
বিশিষ্ট কমিটিতে উন্নীত করা হয়। সভায় আরো সিদ্ধান্ত হয় যে ৬ ডিসেম্বর ১৯৮৪, ১২ রবিউল আউয়াল পবিত্র ঈদে
মিলাদুন্নবীর শুভলগ্নে একটি মিলাদ মাহফিল আয়োজন করে আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে কলেজের সাইনবোর্ড স্থাপন করা হবে এবং
সিদ্ধান্ত অনুসারে সাইনবোর্ড স্থাপন করা হয়। এভাবেই এলাকার বিভিন্ন স্তরের উৎসাহী শিক্ষানুরাগী মানুষের
আন্তরিক সহযোগিতায় শুরু হয় দনিয়া কলেজের পথ চলা।
৩১শে মে ১৯৮৫ তারিখে এক সুধী সমাবেশ অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। এ সভায় প্রধান অতিথি হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন ঢাকা জেলার
তৎকালীন জেলা প্রশাসক জনাব বদিউর রহমান। সমাবেশে আরো উপস্থিত ছিলেন ডেমরা থানার তিন জন ইউনিয়ন পরিষদ
চেয়ারম্যান, ঢাকা পৌরসভার তিন জন ওয়ার্ড কমিশনার, এলাকার রাজনৈতিক ও সামাজিক সংগঠনের নেতৃবৃন্দসহ
গণ্যমান্য ব্যাক্তিবর্গ। এই কলেজের উন্নয়নের জন্য সভার প্রধান অতিথি জেলা প্রশাসক মহোদয় এক লক্ষ টাকার
অনুদান ঘোষণা করেন।
এরপর ১৯৮৫ সালের ১৮ই জুন জেলা প্রশাসক মহোদয়ের কার্যালয়ে এক সভায় কলেজের কাজ সুচারু রূপে সম্পাদনের জন্য
নিম্নলিখিত তিনটি কমিটি গঠন করা হয়।
তখন কলেজ পরিচালনা পর্ষদের সভাপতির দায়িত্ব পালন করেন তৎকালীন অতিরিক্ত জেলা প্রশাসক (প্রশাসন) জনাৰ
ধীরাজ মালাকার। অধ্যক্ষসহ ১২ জন শিক্ষক, এক জন হিসাব রক্ষক, দুই জন পিয়ন ও দুই জন নৈশ প্রহরী কলেজ
প্রতিষ্ঠাকালীন সময়ে কাজে যোগদান করেন। টিনের চালা বিশিষ্ট একটি অফিস কক্ষ ছিল। এ কক্ষেই অফিসের কাজ
পরিচালনার পাশাপাশি শিক্ষকগণের বসার ব্যবস্থা ছিল। একই সাথে অফিস কক্ষের এক পাশে একটি ছোট্ট
লাইব্রেরিও
স্থাপন করা হয়। বড় একটি কক্ষকে তিনভাগ করে সেখানে বিজ্ঞান, মানবিক ও ব্যবসায় শিক্ষার ক্লাস পরিচালিত
হতো।
একটি ছোট্ট টিনের ঘরে ৬৭ জন শিক্ষার্থী নিয়ে ১৯৮৫ সালে উচ্চমাধ্যমিক পর্যায় পাঠ প্রদানের মাধ্যমে
কলেজটির যাত্রা শুরু হয়। উচ্চমাধ্যমিকের পাশাপাশি ১৯৯২-৯৩ শিক্ষা বর্ষ থেকে স্নাতক (পাস) এবং
২০০০-২০০১
শিক্ষাবর্ষে স্নাতক সম্মান কোর্স চালু হয়। এলাকার শিক্ষার্থীদের চাহিদার আলোকে বর্তমানে মোট ১২টি
বিষয়ে
স্নাতক সম্মান কোর্স চালু রয়েছে। ২০১১-১২ শিক্ষাবর্ষে কলেজে বিবিএ প্রফেশনাল কোর্স চালু হয়।
বর্তমানে
কলেজের শিক্ষার্থীর সংখ্যা প্রায় ১০,০০০ হাজার। একটি ছোট্ট টিনের ঘরের হানে নির্মিত হয়েছে একটি ১০
তলা ও
দুটি ৫ তলা বিশিষ্ট আধুনিক ভবন এবং ৮ তলা বিশিষ্ট আইসিটি ভবন।
শিক্ষা বোর্ড ও জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের বিভিন্ন পরীক্ষায় দনিয়া কলেজের শিক্ষার্থীরা আশাব্যঞ্জক ফলাফল
অর্জন করে থাকে। দনিয়া কলেজ থেকে পাশ করা শিক্ষার্থীদের মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য সংখ্যক ঢাকা
বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়,
বাংলাদেশ প্রকৌশল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, মেডিকেল কলেজ ও বিভিন্ন পাবলিক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ভর্তি হওয়ার সুযোগ
পাচ্ছে। দনিয়া কলেজের শিক্ষার্থীদের মধ্যে অনেকেই শিক্ষা জীবন শেষ করে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ও
বাংলাদেশ
প্রকৌশল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়সহ বিভিন্ন খ্যাতনামা শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানে শিক্ষক হিসেবে যোগদান করেছেন।
একইসাথে
সরকারের প্রশাসন ক্যাডারসহ বিভিন্ন ক্যাডার ও সামরিক বাহিনীর কর্মকর্তা হিসেবে কাজ করছেন। বেশ
কয়েকজন
প্রাক্তন শিক্ষার্থী রাজনৈতিক নেতা হিসেবে জাতীয় পর্যায়ে অবদান রাখছেন।
Donia College, located in the Jatrabari police precinct beside the Dhaka-Chattogram highway—the
gateway to the capital city Dhaka—is a distinguished institution for higher secondary and tertiary
education in Bangladesh. As one of the largest colleges in the southeastern region of Dhaka, it has
already secured a top position in the National University’s college rankings. Owing to its effective
teaching methods, well-organized administration, success in co-curricular activities, and consistent
academic performance, the college ranked 4th among private colleges, 9th among all government and
private colleges in metropolitan areas, and 22nd out of 2,200 colleges nationwide—based on 31
evaluation criteria set by the National University.
In the 1980s, areas like Jatrabari, Kadamtali, Shyampur, Donia, Rayerbagh, and Matuail—collectively
known as the Demra region—had no institutions for higher education. The majority of residents in
this region were from middle-class, lower-middle-class, and underprivileged backgrounds. As a
result, students had very limited access to higher secondary and tertiary education. In response,
local education enthusiasts and prominent citizens convened a meeting on November 22, 1984, at Donia
A.K. High School to establish a college. The meeting approved the proposal to establish a college
and formed a 17-member committee to realize the initiative. On November 26 of the same year, the
foundation was laid for the college building. For this reason, the founding principal, Mr. S.M. Kazi
Anwarul Islam, considered November 26 the official founding day of Donia College.
A follow-up meeting of the college establishment committee was held on November 30, 1984, where the
original 17-member committee was expanded to 51 members to involve more community stakeholders. It
was also decided that on December 6, 1984—12 Rabi' al-Awwal, the holy occasion of
Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi—a Milad Mahfil (religious gathering) would be held, and the college’s signboard
would be formally installed, which was done accordingly. Thus, with enthusiastic participation and
heartfelt support from people of all walks of life, Donia College took its first steps.
On May 31, 1985, a grand assembly was held, graced by then-Dhaka District Commissioner Mr. Badiur
Rahman as the chief guest. Also present were three union parishad chairmen from Demra Thana, three
ward commissioners of Dhaka Municipality, and many local political and social leaders. At the event,
the district commissioner generously announced a grant of one lakh taka for the development of the
college.
Later, on June 18, 1985, a meeting at the District Commissioner’s office resulted in the formation
of three committees to oversee smooth college operations:
At the time, the President of the Governing Body was the then-Additional Deputy Commissioner
(Administration), Mr. Dhiraj Malakar. The college began with 12 teachers, one accountant, two peons,
and two night guards. The administration operated from a single tin-roofed office room, which also
served as a common staff room and housed a small library. A large room was partitioned to
accommodate classes for the Science, Humanities, and Business Studies streams.
The college formally began its academic journey in 1985 with 67 students enrolled at the higher
secondary level in a modest tin-roofed building. Over time, the institution expanded its academic
programs, introducing Bachelor’s Pass courses in the 1992–93 academic year and Honours programs in
2000–2001. Currently, the college offers Honours degrees in 12 subjects to meet growing demand. A
BBA Professional course was launched in 2011–12. Today, the college serves nearly 10,000 students
and features a 10-story main academic building, two 5-story buildings, and an 8-story ICT facility.
Students of Donia College consistently perform well in Board and National University exams. A
significant number of alumni have gone on to study at prestigious institutions such as the
University of Dhaka, BUET, and medical colleges across the country. Many have returned to serve as
faculty members in top universities, joined the civil service in various cadres, or taken positions
in the armed forces. Several former students have also made a mark as national political leaders.
